Founded in 1880 by Ikujiro Nakabe as a fish brokerage in Osaka, this company grew into Japan's largest seafood enterprise through over a century of expansion into fishing, canning, aquaculture, and frozen foods. The Maruha and Nichiro lines merged in 2008 to form Maruha Nichiro Corporation, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as a constituent of the Nikkei 225. Key brands include Akebono, Japan's most enduring canned salmon and crab label. In March 2026 the company rebranded to Umios Corporation, reflecting its evolution beyond traditional fisheries into a diversified global food group operating in more than 70 countries.
