Founded in 1937 in Tokyo as Kyokuyo Hogei KK, literally Polar Seas Whaling, after roots in the Ayukawa Hogei whaling operation. Through the 1950s the company pivoted away from whaling into fish processing, launching factory ship operations for salmon and ocean trout in the North Pacific. Canned goods production began in 1949. Now a publicly listed comprehensive seafood company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with operations spanning procurement, processing, frozen foods, and worldwide marine trading. Produces canned mackerel, sardines, salmon, and crab under the Kyokuyo brand.
