The last surviving Cornish salt pilchard operation, purchased by fish merchant Nick Howell in 1982 and based in Newlyn, Cornwall. Trading as The Pilchard Works, the company ceased salted fish production in 2005 but continues to produce MSC-certified tinned Cornish sardine fillets in partnership with Brittany's oldest sardine cannery, using canning techniques refined since 1853. Tins are decorated with Newlyn School paintings by Walter Langley and Frank Bramley.
