Arsène Saupiquet started a sardine cannery in Nantes in 1877, formally establishing the Saupiquet company in 1891. By 1900 the company operated nine factories across Brittany and Vendée, and in 1889 introduced the key-opening tin to the French market, a format the industry subsequently adopted widely. Led consolidation of the Nantes canning industry through the 20th century. Acquired by the Italian Bolton Group in 1999 and now operates one factory in Quimper, Brittany, plus its own tuna fishing fleet.
