Traces its origins to 1899 when seven salmon canners in Astoria, Oregon, formed the Columbia River Packers Association. The Bumble Bee label was created in 1910, named after one of the fleet's fishing boats, when albacore tuna became abundant off the Pacific coast. By 1940 tuna had overtaken salmon as the primary product. Became Bumble Bee Seafoods in 1961 when Castle and Cooke acquired the cooperative. Now headquartered in San Diego, Bumble Bee is North America's largest branded shelf-stable seafood company, also owning Beach Cliff, Brunswick, and Snow's.
