Founded in 1917 in San Pedro, California, as the French Sardine Company of California by Martin J. Bogdanovich, a Croatian immigrant. The company adopted the StarKist name in 1942 and was the largest tuna processing facility in the world by the early 1950s. Acquired by H.J. Heinz in 1963 and sold to Del Monte in 2002. Purchased by South Korean conglomerate Dongwon Industries in 2008. Charlie the Tuna, introduced in 1961, remains one of the most recognised mascots in American food history. Now headquartered in Reston, Virginia.
