Peniche's cannery has run continuously since 1915, through incarnations as Júdice Fialho, Heinz, MWBrands, and now Thai Union, the world's largest tuna company. Through every ownership change the factory has kept producing, employing close to a thousand people in a town where fishing is everything. At 60 tonnes per day, ESIP accounts for more than a third of Portugal's total canned fish output, nearly all of it exported.
