Unlike when eating the spiced version, I felt the need to add some flaky salt to this tin and contemplated adding more things to round it out. Recommend to use a spoon instead of chopsticks to make sure you get the right fish-to-sauce ratio. Still, a step above most all other tomato’d sardines I’ve ever tried. I’d put these at the same level as Pollastrini di Anzio and definitely above ones like Santo Amaro, Bon Appetit, etc. I don’t personally know that I’ll buy this regular version again but that’s mostly because the spiced version exists (and that one broke the tomato sardine scale for me). You should at least try one of the Nuri tomato sardine versions for sure, they treat the tomato sauce as primary ingredient. Greg L (verified owner) – September 16, 2022 Wow, this tin is great. I just kept saying that to myself while I ate this. First, you’re probably here because of the tomato sauce. Nuri does a fantastic job with this sauce. Great cooked tomato flavor without tasting “tomato paste”-y. There’s a hint of sweetness, but strong tomato taste. Second, the sardines themselves were exactly my preference. There were 4 large-for-sardine-sized fish in the tin (2 on the bottom, 2 on the top). The top sardines were the picture of perfection. Bright, silvery skin, completely intact. The bottom 2, though, were beaten up and in small parts. That’s the most negative thing I can say about these. The sardines had a really nice, mild flavor with some depth to the taste. The texture was moist, with medium firmness. A very pleasant bite and mouthfeel. I enjoyed these warmed up a bit in just-off-the-boil water before opening the tin. I ate them on toast with some wilted arugula. An exquisite lunch. If you haven’t tried sardines in tomato before, these are the ones to try. ZA (verified owner) – March 26, 2023 This was overall an enjoyable tin! I decided to heat it up in some boiling water before opening it, and I think that definitely brought it up a notch; cold tomato sauce just isn’t as good. The tomato sauce itself was good; a simple and straightforward tomato that brought a very slight bright acidity to the richer sardines. The sauce was savory rather than sweet, which I personally always find to be better. There were four sardines, of a medium-soft texture. I was rather put-off by finding roe in three of them; for me the roe only adds an unpleasant sandy texture, so I tend to pick it out. (As an aside, does Nuri tend to have more roe in their fish, or is that just coincidence?) Otherwise, great sardines! Only logged in customers who have purchased this product may leave a review.
