UNITED KINGDOM
Cornwall
Southwest England. A pilchard-fishing region since at least 1555, when exports to Catholic southern Europe were first recorded. The fishery peaked in the 18th century, collapsed by the 1970s, and was revived in the 1990s when fisherman Martin Ellis began ring-netting and the fish was rebranded Cornish Sardines. Received MSC certification in 2010. The Pilchard Works in Newlyn, established 1905, is the last operation from the historic industry.
