Azores

A mid-Atlantic archipelago of nine volcanic islands rising from the deep ocean between Europe and North America, the Azores are one of the world's great tuna fishing territories. Pole-and-line fishing for skipjack tuna has been practiced here for generations, producing fish that are MSC-certified and dolphin-safe by default, an ethical profile that sets Azorean tuna apart from most of the global supply chain. Cofaco, the dominant Azorean cannery based in Ribeira Grande on São Miguel, produces more than 50 million cans annually under over a dozen brand labels including Bom Petisco, Tenório, and Bon Appétit. Smaller producers like Casa Do Portinho smoke their fish over endemic island wood. The Azorean tuna fishery is widely considered a model of sustainable large-scale tuna production.
